AN
APPEAL
|
Dear
Friend,
You know the many different faces of cruelty to animals.
You see them every where...starving pups on the road,
abandoned animals, injured circus animals... This
letter is an appeal to you on behalf of and from Mumbai
city's many little 4 legged friends, who are out there
- bringing the smile back on children's faces, befriending
lonely old people, protecting buildings and homes...
and in short transforming the urban cityscape with
their love, affection and loyalty.
IDA India, a Mumbai based animal welfare
organization, established in 1995 has struggled hard
to protect the rights of animals in Mumbai city for
eight years now.

To go to a bit of history, back in 1995, IDA India was formed when a small group of people
committed themselves to saving stray dogs from being
electrocuted. At that time, killing dogs was the
way the Bombay Municipal Corporation controlled
the dog population.
You know how futile that approach is. Not only is
it inhumane, it also returns back the dog population
to the same levels. Killing 50-60 stray dogs everyday
only helped give all the other dogs in the neighbourhood
a better chance of survival. When the Bombay High
Court announced that dogs would not be killed anymore,
IDA India volunteers were jubiliant.
From those early days when operations were performed
from garages transformed into makeshift operation
theatres, the organization has been quietly forging
ahead, setting records and landmarks.
In December 1999, the Bombay High Court handed over
the dog pound premises in Denoar, Mumbai to IDA India for a permanent shelter. That was a major
acheivement for the organization. The dog pound
was a one-acre plot fenced by a compound wall with
10 rooms (10 ft. x 11ft.) to house dogs. Today,
a shelter, complete with operation theatre, recovery
room, kitchen, storeroom, water tanks and office
stand in place of the treacherous dog pound.
In 1997, 252 dogs were neutered and in 2005-06, 3942 dogs were neutered, which is more than 15 times in 10 years. Please read the Annual Report for 2005-06 on this website.
IDA India has ventured into other areas to help animals. A neuter center for dogs has been started at Vashi in Navi Mumbai, which is the twin city of Mumbai and another center has been started at Neral at the foothills of Matheran, to help ponies used for carting people and cargo, as ponies are the only means of transport on the hill station.
IDA India is able to sterilize 400 dogs per month at Deonar center in Mumbai and 225 dogs at its Vashi Centre in Navi Mumbai, besides treatment of innumerable ill / injured animals that are brought in every day from nook and corner of the city.
We know you care and would like to help us out.
